Hello,
I am the daughter, grand-daughter, and great grand-daughter of Darrell Nels Carlson, Irving Carlson & Violet McCormick Carlson, and James McCormick.

I was on the FILA site to contact a board member, and saw the Guestbook, so I decided to write a little note.

I am hoping to donate some things to the museum!!

I want to send a shout out to Hans, Karen Wells andcrew on the island for being so welcoming to The Chicago Hope Academy Girls STEM Sailing members on the Inland Seas Educational Adventure schooner.

We set sail from Suttons Bay and meandered through the Lake Michigan to Lake Charlevoix, Beaver Island, and South Fox Island. On the vessel the girls were taught the ecology of the Great Lakes and the species living in them.

Hans rode out on his dingy and boarded our ship to extend a warm welcome and then encouraged us to set up camp, have a bonfire, and tour the Lighthouse. Karen willingly guided us around and invited us to return to see the monarch butterflies.

Truly, the visit to the island was a highlight and finding the beautiful South Fox Island Lighthouse in the process of being restored was a bonus.

Thank you for the visit.
P.S. Karen I will send you pictures.

After my retirement in 2010, genealogy became my hobby. I learned that I had aunts, uncles and cousins in the area from Northport, MI down to Manistee. (Lee’s Point on the Leelanau Peninsula? Named after my Uncle Robert Lee.) Today, while checking out census records for William F. Green, my 2nd cousin, 2x removed, I found in the 1900 Census, that, at age 25, he was a lighthouse keeper. Not until the 1940 Census did it say that he was keeper at US Coast Guard South Fox Light Station. Can you tell me how long William was keeper there?

Dear FILA,
I just wanted to send a quick note to let you all know that A Keeper of the Flame, my dad, Robert B. Harris passed away on February 28th, 2019. He and my Mom spent their first married year on South Fox Island while my Dad served as a Coast Guard lighthouse keeper in 1953. I believe that his time on the Island was one of the most rewarding times of his life. My sisters and I were fortunate enough take my Mom and Dad back to the Island on his 70th birthday. He was so proud to show us the Island, house and coast guard station in Charlevoix. I will continue his support of South Fox Island and applaud your efforts to keep it alive. Respectfully, Lynn Harris

Hi everyone we have too good blog on blog.advids.co and You can also see all subject related blogs here.

Reply: Gene, although the URL you provided has a commercial background that has absolutely nothing to do with our efforts or even lighthouses in general, which might be called spam, I'm not deleting your post because the stuff there might be useful to some visitors. At least it's not about porn, bootleg software or the like.

Is anything happening with creating a protected harbor? I thought there was something in the works with the State. Thanks.

Reply: Thanks for your interest.

A lot has already been done concerning the construction of a new docking facility (a real "protected harbor" would be asked way too much). In 2016 a bid by an engineering company in Saint Joseph, MI, was approved by the DNR. Meanwhile we have a detailed feasibility study.

We must be patient, though. The logistic problems are huge, and quite a few government agencies are involved, but we are sure it's worth the wait. Our Website will keep you posted once the heavy machinery is rolling in. Probably not this year, because some more survey and assessment work has to be done, which was not possible last fall because of the weather and lake conditions.

I am trying to get a hold of Sandy Bradshaw. I tried to call her phone number I had but it was d/c. I knew her when she lived in Detroit, Mich and last saw her at her home at Sutton Bay about 10 years ago. We sold our home in Grandville and will be moving to the Saginaw Bay area in November of this year. I apologize for using your page for this use of messaging a friend but had no other idea on how to reach her. If possible could this message be relayed to her? I would like to see her before we leave. I am on Face Book. Thank you Bernadette Arocha

G O O D    N E W S !

Thanks to some serious white-hat hacking techniques I was able to retrieve most of the messages of the old defunct guestbook. Meanwhile I converted them to a data format that is compatible with the format of the new guestbook, one by one, a mind-numbing chore but sure worth the effort.

Unfortunately, 10 of the 188 old messages could not be retrieved. Our apologies if your message was one of those that got lost, but it's not our fault. We relied on a professional service that went down the drain.

Visited on 8/11/2016 on our way to the Beaver Island group. Met camper-keepers Bruce and Kathy Rollins. If possible, I'd like their e-mail address. Bruce gave it to me but what I wrote down doesn't seem to be correct. Anyway, it was an interesting tour and I'm glad we stopped.
